Rose McGowan and Robert Osborne give you The Essentials for July.
The muse of director Robert Rodrguez, Rose McGowan, will take the chair for July as Turner Classic Movies co-host of The Essentials, the network’s signature movie showcase.
Each Saturday at 8 p.m. (ET), McGowan joins TCM host Robert Osborne to introduce “must see” movies with an eye toward helping viewers better understand why these films are important.
Her July picks are:
3:10 to Yuma Saturday, July 5, 8 p.m. (ET)
Although ignored by the Oscars, this classic Western landed a nomination for Best Picture from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.
Rose McGowan says of the film: “It’s western noir.”
The Postman Always Rings Twice Saturday, July 12, 8 p.m. (ET)
Lana Turner considered her role as put-upon housewife Cora Smith the best role she ever played.
“Even though she is wearing all white, she has a black heart.” remarks Rose McGowan.
You Can’t take It With You Saturday, July 19, 8 p.m. (ET)
This comedy was the first film in which the crippling arthritis that would eventually confine Lionel Barrymore to a wheelchair began to be evident.
Since the actor was already having to use crutches, director Frank Capra put a cast on his leg and explained it by having the character state that he broke his leg sliding down the banister.
Rose McGowan notes: “It’s such a great message: get out and live your life and stop worrying about what other people think about you. It’s a simple message, but I think often times it’s quite hard to achieve.”
The Bad and the Beautiful Saturday, July 26, 8 p.m. (ET)
A dramatic version of Hollywood (The Bad and the Beautiful) and a musical version of Hollywood (Singing in the Rain) where filming at the same time, on the same lot, on sound stages across from each other.
Rose McGowan added: “Kirk Douglas trying to rise to be this great man and turning into something else is a universal thing that you’ve probably seen in your own family or people that you know.”
The Essentials Past hosts have included Rob Reiner, Peter Bogdanovich and Sydney Pollack. Robert Osborne took over hosting duties in 2005, pairing with film critic and author Molly Haskell. Last year, Carrie Fisher joined Osborne as co-host.
